Tjanpi Desert Weavers is a not-for-profit arts enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women’s Council. Tjanpi’s philosophy is to keep culture strong, maintain links with country and provide meaningful employment to the keepers and teachers of desert weaving.
Given our geographic range and the number of Tjanpi artists living across the central and western desert region overheads are high. Providing a regular service to distribute at-cost art materials to Tjanpi artists and pick up art work on their behalf is costly. Fuel demands can be considerable and vehicle service and repairs are an ongoing necessity.
Tjanpi conducts an annual program of artistic and professional skills development workshops held in remote communities to provide support to senior artists, to develop mid-range and emerging artists and to encourage new fibre artists. The creative development workshops also incorporate trips to collect grass that also facilitate hunting and gathering bush foods and medicines, visiting and caring for country and passing on important cultural knowledge to the next generation. Additionally Tjanpi actively supports the practice and transmission of inma (cultural song and dance) at these events.
Whilst Tjanpi is the recipient of funding from philanthropic organisations and federal government we seek additional assistance to enhance our program of activities.
We welcome donations from the general public.
Your donation ensures the on-going creative and professional development of Tjanpi artists and contributes to the cultural maintenance of NPY communities. If you would like to make a donation please contact us at tjanpi@npywc.org.au
